Written in Montecassino around 529, they still characterise daily life at the Benedictine monastery in Admont today.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"60\" data-end=\"346\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"348\" data-end=\"590\">At the centre is the first and most important task of every monk:\u00a0<strong data-start=\"412\" data-end=\"447\">To glorify God in prayer.<\/strong>\u00a0Several times a day we gather for the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"488\" data-end=\"504\">Liturgy of the Hours<\/strong>\u00a0and to the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"513\" data-end=\"531\">Holy Mass<\/strong>to live together in the silence and power of prayer.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"348\" data-end=\"590\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"592\" data-end=\"806\">But monastic life encompasses much more: in addition to spiritual service, we monks also take on numerous other tasks - borne by a deep sense of community, responsibility and constancy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-m\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"808\" data-end=\"883\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><strong data-start=\"808\" data-end=\"883\" data-is-last-node=\"\">A life in balance - between prayer, work and spiritual immersion.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\t<section class=\"firepress-section firepress-content\"\n\t\t\n\t\tdata-firepress-content\n\t\tdata-firepress-lightbox-group>\n\n\t\t<div class=\"firepress-content__inner\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"firepress-content__grid firepress-content__grid--one-half\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t<div class=\"firepress-content__box firepress-content__box--one\">\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"prose\"><h5 class=\"heading-m line line-above line--gold\">Ora \u2013 Pray<\/h5>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-m\">The first and most important task of the monks is the prayer.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-m\">St. Benedikt wrote in his rule: At the hour for the Divine Office, as soon as the signal is heard, let them abandon whatever they may have in hand and let them come in great haste.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-m\">(Rule of Benedict Chapter 43,1)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"heading-m line line-above line--gold\">Labora \u2013 work<\/h5>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-m\">In the times between prayers, the monks perform different services.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-m\">Idleness is the enemy of the soul. class=\"prose\"><h5 class=\"heading-m line line-above line--gold\">Tasks within the monastery<\/h5>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-m\">The monastery complex covers an area of 12.65 hectares and offers a wide range of tasks that the monks fulfil together with 500 employees. The abbot is the spiritual father and economic head and is responsible for all areas. The prior represents the abbot in his absence and is responsible for organisational processes within the monastery. Admont Abbey is known as a spiritual and cultural centre far beyond the borders of Austria.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-m\">Beside the museum the monastery is home of\u00a0<a href=\"\/en\/about-the-abbey-library\/\">the world largest monastery library <\/a>which contains about 70.000 books. The whole collection includes about 200.000 books with around 1400 manuscripts and printings, which are stored in the archive of the abbey. Hospitality is an important issue in the rule. There is a guest Master who accommodates people in the monastery.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-m\">Beside this tasks there are further services of the monks, for example master of the kitchen, novice master, rector of the oblates etc. Every monk is installed in a task regarding his personal talents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t<div class=\"firepress-content__box firepress-content__box--two\">\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"prose\"><h5 class=\"heading-m line line-above line--gold\">Task outside the monastery<\/h5>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-m\">Not only inside the monastery, as well as outside of the house there are a huge range of pastoral tasks. The abbey runs <a href=\"https:\/\/hausderbegegnung.or.at\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meeting House<\/a> and a hall of residence for students in Graz to keep in touch with students and graduates of the Stiftsgymnasium. Also some fraternitys are served by Admonter monks.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-m\">The abbey is a regional motor, not only in economic issues. In every stage of life the monastery is active. For the elderly people the house runs a nursing home.
