Damit sollte sein Andenken, sein \u201eGedechtnus\u201c, f\u00fcr die Nachwelt gesichert werden und zuk\u00fcnftigen F\u00fcrsten ein Beispiel sein. margin: 12.0pt 0cm 24.0pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black; mso-color-alt: windowtext;\">Die Handschriftenproduktion hatte im Sp\u00e4tmittelalter eine Kommerzialisierung erlebt; Werkst\u00e4tten wie die von Ulrich Schreier in Salzburg und Wien erg\u00e4nzten die kl\u00f6sterlichen Schreibstuben und erm\u00f6glichten auch Privatpersonen, Handschriften nach ihrem Geschmack anfertigen zu lassen. Um 1450 l\u00e4utete die Erfindung des Buchdrucks durch Johannes Gutenberg eine Zeit des Medienwandels ein und schuf die Grundlage f\u00fcr die Massenproduktion von Texten. Die ersten gedruckten B\u00fccher wurden nach dem Vorbild mittelalterlicher Manuskripte gestaltet. Maximilian nutzte die neuen Medien und lie\u00df biografische Werke anfertigen, die in erz\u00e4hlerischer Form seine Leistungen r\u00fchmten. Geschickt lie\u00df Maximilian historische Fakten in ein fiktionales Gewand verpacken: Als Ritter Theuerdank bestreitet er unz\u00e4hlige Abenteuer auf dem Weg zu seiner Braut Ehrenreich, die f\u00fcr seine erste Frau, Maria von Burgund (1457-1482), steht, und als Wei\u00dfkunig tr\u00e4gt er Sorge f\u00fcr sein \u201eGedechtnus\u201c.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-m\" style=\"background: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; widows: 2; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; word-spacing: 0px; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 24.0pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black; mso-color-alt: windowtext;\">Der Freydal ist ein Turnierbuch, das die Lebensgeschichte des jungen Kaisers Maximilian I. auf allegorische Weise nacherz\u00e4hlt. Wie handschriftliche Notizen zeigen, griff Maximilian selbst immer wieder korrigierend in die Arbeiten ein. Dabei ging es ihm nicht nur um Vervielf\u00e4ltigung, sondern auch um Perfektion: F\u00fcr den Theuerdank, der 1517 in einer ersten Auflage erschien, wurde eine eigene Schrift mit jeweils mehreren Varianten einzelner Buchstaben und vielen Schmuckelementen entworfen. Dar\u00fcber hinaus enth\u00e4lt das Werk zahlreiche Holzschnitte, die von prominenten K\u00fcnstlern der Zeit gefertigt wurden. Da Lesef\u00e4higkeit eher die Ausnahme denn die Regel war, verbreitete Maximilian I. seine Botschaften auch mit anderen Mitteln: Verordnungen wurden etwa \u00f6ffentlich verlesen und Bilder mittels M\u00fcnzen unter das Volk gebracht. Sein Tod und Nachruhm haben Maximilian zu Lebzeiten mehr als besch\u00e4ftigt: Davon zeugen die mehrj\u00e4hrige Planung seiner Grablege oder der Auftrag, nach seinem Tod ein Portrait von ihm zu malen.
