Stammel a \u00e9t\u00e9 au service de l'abbaye d'Admont pendant plus de quatre d\u00e9cennies. Il \u00e9tait contemporain de Georg Raphael Donner et de Bartolomeo Altomonte. Il appartenait donc \u00e0 une g\u00e9n\u00e9ration d'artistes qui ont port\u00e9 le baroque tardif \u00e0 son dernier apog\u00e9e. Ses \u0153uvres sont en relation tendue avec le reste de la conception de la salle de la biblioth\u00e8que d'Admont, marqu\u00e9e par l'esprit des Lumi\u00e8res. Les sculptures de Josef Stammel sont r\u00e9alis\u00e9es en bois de tilleul. \u00c0 l'exception des bustes dor\u00e9s, elles sont bronz\u00e9es, ce qui donne une illusion de mati\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"heading-m line line-above line--gold\">Grands reliefs<\/h5>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-m\">Deux grands reliefs se trouvent sur les deux c\u00f4t\u00e9s \u00e9troits de la salle de la biblioth\u00e8que, \u00e0 hauteur de la galerie. Le relief du c\u00f4t\u00e9 sud repr\u00e9sente un motif bien connu de l'Ancien Testament : le \"jugement de Salomon\", incarnation de la sagesse humaine. J\u00e9sus enseignant dans le temple est repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 sur le c\u00f4t\u00e9 nord, comme le pendant du Nouveau Testament et l'illustration de la sagesse divine. Les hauts-reliefs presque en relief dans les cadres peints en forme de m\u00e9daillon \u00e0 la hauteur de la galerie dans les deux salles ext\u00e9rieures montrent en tout huit personnages bibliques : du c\u00f4t\u00e9 sud, des repr\u00e9sentants de l'Ancien Testament, Mo\u00efse et Elie, avec en face d'eux les ap\u00f4tres Pierre et Paul ; du c\u00f4t\u00e9 nord, les quatre \u00e9vang\u00e9listes Luc, Jean, Matthieu et Marc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-m\">\u00c0 l'\u00e9tage sup\u00e9rieur de la pi\u00e8ce centrale, les repr\u00e9sentations personnifi\u00e9es des quatre vertus sous forme f\u00e9minine tiennent un dialogue th\u00e9matique : la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 \u00e9ternelle (\"veritas eterna\"), la sagesse divine (\"sapientia divina\"), la prudence (\"prudentia\") ainsi que la science (\"scientia\").<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\t<section class=\"firepress-section firepress-content firepress-section--background firepress-section--background-beige\"\n\t\t\n\t\tdata-firepress-content\n\t\tdata-firepress-lightbox-group>\n\n\t\t<div class=\"firepress-content__inner\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"firepress-content__grid firepress-content__grid--one-hundred\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t<div class=\"firepress-content__box firepress-content__box--one\">\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"prose\"><h5 class=\"heading-m line line-above line--gold\">Les quatre derni\u00e8res choses<\/h5>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-m\">\u00c9galement sous la coupole centrale : le groupe de Josef Stammel \"Les quatre derni\u00e8res choses\", vers 1755-60. Les quatre statues plus grandes que nature sont caract\u00e9ris\u00e9es par une gestuelle et des mimiques prononc\u00e9es. Elles repr\u00e9sentent la mort, la r\u00e9surrection (en m\u00eame temps que le jugement), l'enfer et le paradis. Elles reprennent un th\u00e8me eschatologique central de l'\u00e9poque baroque. Face \u00e0 sa mort, le voyageur humain doit faire face aux derni\u00e8res choses. Dans le cadre du jugement divin, il d\u00e9cidera plus tard si la gloire c\u00e9leste ou la damnation infernale l'attend. Les quatre sculptures se font face dans la pi\u00e8ce centrale, entre les colonnes et les biblioth\u00e8ques, depuis 1800 environ. A l'origine, elles n'\u00e9taient toutefois pas destin\u00e9es \u00e0 \u00eatre plac\u00e9es \u00e0 cet endroit.
