The history of the Admont nunnery
The Admont nunnery was founded between 1116 and 1120 according to the Benedictine rule. The first nuns probably came from Nonnberg in Salzburg. The nunnery quickly gained a reputation beyond the region, as Admont nuns were appointed abbesses. …worked in reform monasteries in southern Germany.
The nunnery in Admont received a significant cultural boost not least thanks to its own library with around 360 volumes in the 14th century! Discover particularly significant artefacts from the former nunnery in the special exhibition and find out more about the complex history of the Admont nuns, who worked in Admont until the 16th century.
