It is not a matter of course to get such a sought-after choir from outside Vienna or the German metropolises to Admont. Hundreds of enquiries at the management office of the choirboys bear witness to this fact. And they are happy to come.
On Friday, 23 August 2024, starting at 19:30, the Vienna Boys' Choir will take to the stage of the Great Festival Hall and bring unique summer choir sounds to Admont.
About the Vienna Boys' Choir:
The oldest reference to a boys' choir in the Vienna Hofburg Chapel dates back to 1296. In 1498, more than 520 years ago, Emperor Maximilian I moved his court and court music to Vienna. This laid the foundation for the Vienna Boys' Choir. Over the centuries, the music-loving court attracted musicians such as Mozart and Bruckner. Franz Schubert himself was a choirboy, Joseph and Michael Haydn sang as "substitutes" in the imperial choir.
Today, the Vienna Boys' Choir is a private, non-profit organisation that does not receive any public funding but relies on donations. Around 100 boys sing in the four choirs. Together, they give almost 300 performances in front of half a million spectators all over the world in normal years: over 1,000 tours to 99 countries are on the books. On Sundays, they perform with members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera Chorus in the Hofburgkapelle in Vienna.
Highlights include performances at the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert and at the Salzburg Festival. The first recording was made in 1907; since then, 377 shellacs, LPs and CDs have been produced. Numerous films and documentaries attest to the choir's international popularity.
Around 300 children and young people attend the schools of the Vienna Boys' Choir. The choral tradition of the Vienna Boys' Choir is listed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in Austria.
