952 years of living the Benedictine tradition - Admont Abbey

The monks of Admont Benedictine Abbey have been living and working according to the Rule of St Benedict for over 950 years: "Ora et labora - Pray and work." Today, the community has 22 monks who live under the leadership of Abbot Gerhard Hafner O.S.B. stand.

They gather several times a day for choral prayer and Holy Mass - in the service of God and for the intentions of the people of our time.

The monastery was founded in 1074 on a foundation by the st. Hemma of Gurk, realised by Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg. The first monks came from St Peter's Abbey in Salzburg - and laid the foundation stone for the oldest continuously existing monastery in Styria.

Today, Admont Abbey is a place of living diversity, spiritual depth and cultural radiance - then as now a lively centre of the region.
