In memory of Herbert Brandl

We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the renowned artist Herbert Brandl. His death leaves a noticeable gap in the Austrian art landscape - not only because of his artistic work, but also because of his personality, which inspired and touched many people.

Herbert Brandl was one of the most important representatives of contemporary painting in Austria. His work is also prominently represented in the Admont Benedictine Abbey's collection of contemporary art - from early works from the 1980s to works from the year 2000.

His large-format paintings have been shown in Admont time and again - either as part of our own exhibitions or as important loans, for example at presentations in Graz. Two of his impressive works are currently on display in the special exhibition "Contemporary Art in Old Walls", where they once again impressively demonstrate the powerful form of expression that Brandl's painting possesses.

His uncompromising approach to art, his impressive visual language and his ability to combine emotion, the force of nature and stillness in intensely colourful compositions will be remembered as a formative contribution to the art of our time.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Herbert Brandl's family, his friends and all those who had a personal and artistic connection with him.
