VIRTUAL TOUR THROUGH THE PARISH CHURCH
The church in St. Lorenzen im Paltentale was first mentioned in a document in 1125, making it the oldest parish and the original and mother parish of all other churches in the Paltental valley. The most recent parish to be separated from St. Lorenzen is the town parish of Trieben, which was established as a diocesan parish in 1955.
St. Lorenzen was elevated to a parish in 1159 and has been incorporated into the Benedictine monastery of Admont since 1168. The church was burnt down by the Turks in 1480 and rebuilt in the following years.
The church was given its present Baroque appearance in the years 1677-1678; the roofs were renewed after a fire in 1833.
Changes were made to the exterior of the church in 1974 and the interior in 1963-1964 and 1982 (painting of the rear part of the church) and 1985 (renovation of the floor in the nave).
In 2006, the interior of the parish church was extensively renovated, including the installation of pew heating; the façade was renovated in 2016.
The feast of the church and parish patron saint - St Laurentius - is celebrated on the Sunday before or after the saint's feast day, 10 August.
The parish includes the branch church of St. John in Dietmannsdorf (built in 1171, St. John the Baptist 24 June) and the chapels in Schwarzenbach, Singsdorf and Bärndorf.
Politically, the parish of St. Lorenzen is divided between the municipalities of Trieben (St. Lorenzen, Dietmannsdorf, Schwarzenbach) and Rottenmann (Edlach, Singsdorf, Bärndorf).
Dietmannsdorf Filial Church
The little church, dedicated to St John the Baptist, was built under Salzburg rule. At the end of the 12th century, Dietmannsdorf passed to Admont Abbey.
The original Romanesque design of the church has been preserved, particularly in the shape of the interior with its floor plan, wooden beam ceiling and fragmentary frescoes, and is similar in some areas to St John's Church in Pürgg. Additions in the Gothic and Baroque periods have partially altered the room. The Romanesque portal and the iron-bound main door, as well as the frescoes of the Virgin Mary and St Christopher on the south wall are worthy of note. Two late Gothic winged altars from around 1520 were sold to the Johanneum State Museum in 1904; it has not been possible to clarify why the altars were sold.
Today, the church is owned by the municipality of Trieben, but is administered as a sacred building by the parish.
