Candlemas - The light that meets us

On 2 February, the Church celebrates Candlemas, also known as the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Forty days after Christmas, Mary brings the child Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem. There, Simeon and Hannah recognise in him the promised salvation - a light that breaks through all darkness.

Light is at the centre of this day. The candles, which are traditionally blessed, remind us that Christ is the light of the world. He brings hope, direction and warmth into our lives, especially where things seem dark or uncertain. Candlemas invites us not only to contemplate this light, but also to carry it forward - in our words, in our actions and in our dealings with one another.

At the same time, this festival marks a transition: Christmas comes to an end and we look to the future. It is a moment of pause and renewal. Where do I need light? Where can I be a light for others? We can celebrate Candlemas with these questions - quietly, gratefully and full of trust.
