Gesäuse speciality market in Admont Abbey

Speciality market at Admont Abbey

As the successor to the Monastery Market Days, Admont Abbey has launched the Gesäuse Speciality Market in cooperation with the Abbey Cellar. The main difference to the former major event is that the products on offer come exclusively from the Gesäuse region.

From award-winning apple wines and Xeis noble game to beer bread and marzizoni: in addition to the unspoilt nature of Styria's only national park and the cultural heritage of the Benedictine monastery of Admont, the Gesäuse also has a lot to offer in culinary terms. In future, typical regional delicacies and local foods will not only be available in farm shops and selected shops, but also at the Gesäuse speciality market. The advantage: "If you want to buy regional produce, you will no longer have to travel from one producer to the next, as the Gesäuse Speciality Market will offer the full diversity of the region in one place," says Mario Brandmüller, Head of Culture, Tourism and PR at Admont Abbey.

Supporting local producers

The Gesäuse Speciality Market has big shoes to fill, as it is the direct successor to the traditional Monastery Market Days, which took place for the last time last year. Despite the success of the major annual event, the decision to launch a new format was a very conscious one, says Brandmüller: "With the Gesäuse Speciality Market, we are creating the opportunity to support exclusively local producers in their direct marketing for the first time." This also means that "Gesäuse specialities are becoming better known - both in this country and beyond", as Ulrich Matlschweiger from the Stiftskeller emphasises.

Shaping a sustainable future

For Ulrich Matlschweiger, it is essential "to be able to shape a sustainable future if awareness of local food grows", says the tenant of the Stiftskeller and co-organiser of the new Gesäuse speciality market. After all, Matlschweiger emphasises, this not only helps to preserve the local cultural landscape, but also to safeguard traditional craftsmanship and high-quality food production.

Gesäuse speciality market dates: From May to September on the first Saturday of every month from 10:00 to 16:00 at the entrance to the Admont Benedictine Abbey Rosarium.
