Bending and breaking - (manuscripts) of the Gothic period
The Gothicisation of Carolingian minuscule at the end of the 12th century is visible in the Admont scriptorium. This script, which had been in use throughout Europe for almost four centuries from the time of Charlemagne, gradually changed. Scribes began to "bend" the letters and increasingly used the "broken" Gothic texture in calligraphic scripts.
The 2017 manuscript exhibition documented the development of script from Carolingian minuscule to the new Gothic book scripts such as textura, bastarda and cursive, as well as the layouts of Gothic manuscripts with new illustrative elements. Font and image design in Gothic book culture were presented using Admont manuscripts and fragments. The first textbooks on the history of writing, which were also on display, showed the development of writing since the 17th century.
