The herb garden at Admont Benedictine Abbey
A huge variety of plants
Creation
The Admont Herb Garden was created in 1998 next to the Abbey pond, at the location of the original baroque ornamental garden. The garden follows the medieval principle of combining medicinal, culinary, and ornamental plants. A total of 1,000 species are planted within six geometrically arranged beds.
Consecration
The individual plots were dedicated to significant saints and historical figures closely related to the Admont Abbey: St. Benedict (founder of the order), St. Blaise (patron of the abbey church), Fr. Gabriel Strobl (Admont monk and founder of the Natural History Museum), Abbot Engelbert von Admont (medieval scholar), Walahfrid Strabo (a monk from Reichenau in the Middle Ages who maintained a garden similar to the Admont herb garden).
