Ash Wednesday 2026
Wednesday, 18 February 2026
The Ash Wednesday is an important day in the Christian church year and marks the beginning of the 40-day fasting period before Easter. It follows Shrove Tuesday. In church services, the faithful receive an ash cross on their foreheads, usually with the words: „Remember, man, that you are dust and will return to dust“ or „Repent and believe in the Gospel.“
The ashes symbolise transience, reflection and new beginnings. Many people use this time to consciously fast, rethink their habits or focus more on their faith. Ash Wednesday therefore symbolises repentance, inner cleansing and preparation for Easter.
From the abbot's sermon:
Live the gospel of Jesus Christ, whatever you have understood, no matter how little, but live it.
