Gebhard's Day at Admont Abbey - in the footsteps of our founder
Admont Abbey marked this year’s Gebhard Day with a solemn service and a pilgrimage from the surrounding parishes. On this special day, we commemorate our founder, Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg, who founded Admont Abbey in 1074, thereby laying the foundation for more than 950 years of Benedictine life, education, culture and pastoral care in the Enns Valley.
The festive service was celebrated together with Archabbot Jakob Auer OSB of Salzburg. The pupils of Admont Abbey School organised the liturgy with great dedication and enriched the service with their musical and spoken contributions. This gave the service a lively yet profound atmosphere, which particularly emphasised the character of this day of remembrance.
A visible sign of the bond with the abbey was the pilgrimage from the surrounding parishes. Numerous worshippers from various parishes made their way to Admont to celebrate St Gebhard’s Day together. The shared journey and the gathering at the abbey powerfully illustrated the vibrant community that has formed around the monastery over the centuries.
Gebhard Day invites us to reflect on the abbey’s origins and, at the same time, to reconsider the significance of its mission for the present day. Archbishop Gebhard’s legacy reminds us to live out our faith, promote education, strengthen our community, and take responsibility for the Church and society.
Admont Abbey would like to thank everyone involved, in particular Archabbot Jakob Auer OSB, the pupils of the Abbey School, the pilgrims and all the guests who joined in the celebrations on this special day. Their commitment and participation have helped to ensure that St Gebhard’s Day has once again this year been a powerful symbol of faith and community.
