The Styrian Admont Abbey and European Benedictine monasticism
from 18 to 20 May 2022 at Admont Abbey

Benedict of Nursia and his rule gave rise to a Europe-wide network of monasteries from the 6th century onwards. The reform monasticism that emerged from the Burgundian abbey of Cluny and was spread to the German[1] speaking cultural area, particularly via the Black Forest monastery of Hirsau, also took root in Austria. Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg founded Admont Abbey in 1074. A nunnery existed nearby from the 12th to the 16th century.

Based on the genesis of the flourishing Admont Abbey, the conference will shed light on important aspects of culture and memoria in European Benedictine monasticism. It will focus on the transmission of education and knowledge, the relationship between monastery and university, Benedictine scholars and their work, liturgy and commemoration, and iconography in the service of memoria. Special attention will be paid to the Admont Library, the world's largest monastery library. The role and significance of monastic libraries (including scriptoria) in Europe will be analysed in a fundamental way. This will be done taking into account the book collections of the popes, in particular the Vatican Library. The research perspectives range from the Middle Ages to the present day and include questions about the digital communication of faith and culture. In this way, the conference will also contribute to the public discourse in politics and the mass media, the Church and academia on the importance of cultural heritage for a Europe that is growing ever closer together.
